CT Preservation Award of Merit

Twenty-five years ago, longtime Parkville resident Carlos Mouta bought several buildings in this former industrial neighborhood now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. When a FastTrack bus terminal opened nearby, Parkville became more accessible, sparking new opportunities for redevelopment, and @parkvillemarket was born. Today, we had the chance to join the team to present them with their CT Preservation Award of Merit- and have lunch! The market campus consists of three buildings built in 1914 and 1921 for a lumber company. The central building, a 200-foot-long warehouse, is the first to be redeveloped has been transformed into a vibrant food hall, offering space for 18 vendors as well as dining areas, meeting rooms, and event space. Sustainable design and cooperation with local nonprofits played important roles in the conversion. Although the market opened in the middle of the pandemic, all segments of the community have happily come to eat, drink, work on their laptops, play in the courtyard, and meet in the meeting rooms. By highlighting Hartford’s diverse population and its food culture, Parkville Market has been embraced by its neighbors and not seen as a foothold for gentrification.
